This is a small excerpt from my original graphic novel, Mauereinfälle (Ideas/Incidents at the Wall). It tells three stories of people who tried to escape over the Berlin Wall: Ida Siekmann, Konrad Schumann, and two fictional characters, Theo and Susanne. Here, the story picks up after Konrad’s successful defection to the West, where he meets Peter, who photographed his “Leap to Freedom” and became his friend. Following the popular Rahmengeschichte structure of the graphic novel, the book begins and ends with the real events of my time at the Berlin Wall with my friend, Taylor, in 2022. It is a visual representation of the thoughts and feelings going through my head as I put my hand to the Wall.
